Piyush Chawla, the veteran Indian leg-spinner and two-time World Cup winner, officially announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on June 6, 2025, marking the end of a professional career that spanned over two decades. Chawla, 36, made the announcement via social media, expressing deep gratitude to his family, coaches, IPL franchises, and fans, and credited his late father as a guiding force throughout his journey.
Chawla debuted for India as a teenager and was known for his clever mix of googlies and quicker deliveries. He played three Tests, 25 ODIs, and seven T20Is for India, with his last international appearance coming at the 2012 T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka. He was part of India’s squads for both the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup and the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, contributing to two of the nation’s most iconic cricketing triumphs.
While his international appearances were limited, Chawla had a significant impact in domestic and franchise cricket. He took 446 first-class wickets and 319 T20 wickets, and was a consistent performer for Uttar Pradesh and various IPL teams, including Kolkata Knight Riders, with whom he won titles in 2012 and 2014. In the IPL, he leaves as one of the league’s highest wicket-taking spinners, renowned for delivering under pressure and playing key roles in multiple title-winning campaigns.
Chawla’s last domestic appearance was in the 2024–25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, after which he went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction. His retirement also means that, from India’s 2011 World Cup-winning squad, only Virat Kohli remains active in international cricket.
