Angelo Mathews Announces Retirement from Test Cricket

Date:

Angelo Mathews, the veteran Sri Lankan all-rounder and former captain, officially retired from Test cricket after playing his final match against Bangladesh in Galle in June 2025. Mathews had announced beforehand that the first Test of the two-match series would be his last in the longest format. He concluded his Test career with 8,214 runs in 119 matches, including 16 centuries and 45 half-centuries, and also took 33 wickets. Mathews debuted in Tests at Galle against Pakistan in 2009 and fittingly ended his career at the same venue 16 years later.

Mathews expressed deep gratitude for the support he received throughout his career, highlighting memorable moments such as Sri Lanka’s historic win against England in England and the 3-0 whitewash of Australia at home as his top Test memories. He described the journey as filled with ups and downs and thanked teammates, coaches, and fans for their unwavering support.

While Mathews has retired from Test cricket, he has confirmed he will continue to play white-ball cricket and aims to retire from all international formats after the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Sri Lanka and India.
