Glenn Maxwell, one of Australia’s most dynamic white-ball cricketers, announced his retirement from ODI cricket on June 2, 2025. Several factors led to this decision:
- Unselfish Transition for Team’s Future: Maxwell stated he did not want to “hog his spot” as Australia begins planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup. He felt it was time for younger players to have the opportunity to establish themselves in the side, rather than him holding on for a few more series for selfish reasons.
- Physical Challenges and Body’s Response: Maxwell admitted that his body was struggling to cope with the physical demands of the 50-over format, particularly after experiencing soreness and fatigue during the 2025 Champions Trophy. He felt he was “letting the team down” as he could no longer consistently perform at his best throughout a full ODI match.
- Prioritizing T20 and Domestic Commitments: Maxwell intends to focus on T20 cricket, including Australia’s campaign for the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, as well as the Big Bash League and other global T20 leagues.
- Recent Form and Injuries: Maxwell’s recent ODI and IPL seasons were marred by injuries and inconsistent form, further influencing his decision to step away from the longer white-ball format.
Maxwell retires from ODIs as a two-time World Cup winner (2015, 2023), with 3,990 runs at a strike rate of 126.7 and 77 wickets in 149 matches, and will continue to play T20 cricket for Australia.
