He set this record during the second Test against England at Edgbaston in July 2025, surpassing the previous mark held by Virat Kohli, who scored an unbeaten 254 against South Africa in Pune in 2019.
Gill’s 269 is not only the highest by an Indian captain in Tests but also the highest by any Indian batter in Tests outside Asia, overtaking Sachin Tendulkar’s 241* at the SCG in 2004. This innings is also the highest by an Indian in England, beating Sunil Gavaskar’s 221 at The Oval in 1979.
